Flea Tick and Mosquito Control

Numerous medical advancements have been made over the course of the last decade in the area of flea, tick, and mosquito control products. The options now available can suit the needs of many people and their animal companions.

While it's possible to eradicate a flea infestation in a reasonable amount of time, for pets that are sensitive, if not outright allergic, to the saliva associated with flea bites, such an approach to managing the problem might be "too little, too late." As previously mentioned, young, small, old, and/or debilitated animals might also unnecessarily suffer due to a prolific flea population. Both of these are good reasons to consider having a flea-prevention management plan in place prior to an outbreak occurring or a medical problem arising. Due to the extreme nature of some of the previously mentioned illnesses and/or diseases, it's also best to repel and/or kill ticks and mosquitoes before they too become an issue.

Methods of Control

Control of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can be approached on many levels ranging from preventative/proactive to eradicating/active. Perhaps the best way to discuss methods of controlling fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes is by considering the following classifications/categories to such approaches:

  • Direct Kill versus Inhibitors/Regulators versus Repellants
  • Topical versus Ingestible versus Surface applications of control
  • Medications versus "Natural" forms of control
  • Environmental Control/Habitat Management

Please note that all of the products to be discussed potentially fall under several of these headings. For example, one item could be an herbal/natural repellent that's applied to various surfaces in the animal's environment (e.g., their bed), while another product might be a medicated, topically applied, direct kill form of control.
